Jamie Nonni, CEO of Portland-based MuniciPAY, which ranked #4657 on the 2018 Inc. 5,000 list

Inc. magazine’s 2018 list of the country’s 5,000 fastest growing privately held companies includes 10 businesses that call Maine home.

Ten companies appearing on the list is about average. Last year there 12, and only eight the year before that.

This year’s list, which ranks companies based on three-year revenue growth, includes a few companies I’ve covered before in Maine Startups Insider, including Vets First Choice, Tilson Technology Management, and MuniciPAY.

Vets First Choice ranked at #1815 with 2017 revenue of $157.5 million, representing three-year growth of 248%. This is the seventh year in a row that Vets First Choice, which recently announced plans to go public via a merger, has made the Inc. 5,000 list. It ranked #1112 last year with 2016 revenue of $83.3 million, and ranked #1232 the year before with 2015 revenue of $60.9 million. It first made the list in 2012 at #30 based on 2011 revenue of $7.5 million, which at the time represented three-year revenue growth of 6,132.62%, according to Inc.

This is the eighth year on the list for Tilson, a Portland-based company that manages telecommunications infrastructure projects across the country. According to the company, only a fraction of companies on the list have ranked more than once, and less than 2% have made the list eight or more times. This year, it’s ranked at #1796 with 2017 revenue of $44.2 million, representing three-year revenue growth of 251%.

MuniciPAY, which provides payment technology solutions to municipal governments, is on the list for the fourth straight year. This year it’s at #4657 with 2017 revenue of $3.9 million, representing three-year revenue growth of 68%. (Here’s an interview I did with founder and CEO Jamie Nonni.)

Here are the Maine companies that made the 2018 Inc. 5,000 list:

  • SaviLinx (#617), a call center in Brunswick;
  • Veritas Prime (#1101), a company in Portland that focuses on “Human Capital Management” software;
  • F3 MFG (#1317), a manufacturing company in Waterville;
  • Tilson Technology Management (#1796), a Portland-based company that manages telecommunications infrastructure projects across the country;
  • Cirrus Systems (#1798), a company that manufactures outdoor LED screens based in Emeryville;
  • Vets First Choice (#1815), the Portland-based company that provides technology and outsourced pharmacy services to veterinarian offices;
  • Sound Rink (#1869), which sells VIP ticket packages within the live-music industry;
  • Dream Local Digital (#3237), a digital marketing agency in Rockland;
  • Mailings Unlimited (#4539), a company in Portland that provides data entry and management, shipping and other mailing services for corporate clients;
  • and MuniciPAY (#4657), which provides payment technology solutions to municipal governments.

No Maine company made the more-coveted Inc. 500 list this year, but that’s not always the case. Last year, SaviLinx, which is also on this year’s list, ranked #28 on the entire list. Sound Rink, which is also on this year’s list, ranked #232 on the 2016 list. Several other Maine companies have made the Inc. 500 list in previous years: Provider Power (#32 in 2013, #6 in 2014), Vets First Choice (#30 in 2012, #24 in 2013), and CashStar (#103 in 2013).

Whenever reporting on the Inc. 5,000 list, I always make this disclosure: It’s important to understand that the Inc. 5,000 list is not the definitive list of the fastest growing private companies in the country. It is the list of the fastest growing companies that were also willing to pay a fee and reveal their revenue figures to Inc. magazine for consideration.
