Oyster Tracker, the startup behind a software platform that helps oyster farmers more efficiently manage their farms, has changed its name to BlueTrace.
The company, founded in 2018, currently works with 120 clients in 12 states and four countries. (For more information on the company, Maine Startups Insider published a Q&A with Chip Terry, the company’s co-founder and CEO, in September 2020.)
The name change comes as the scope of the company’s platform grows. Although the bulk of BlueTrace’s clients are still oyster farms, it has an increasing number of clients using the platform to manage other types of shellfish, such as clams and mussels.
“We are broader than oysters. Oysters were a great place to start and will always be our home, but time to leave the harbor,” Cat Ganim, a co-founder, writes in a blog post announcing the name change.
What has become clear is the software platform’s core competency is not about helping oyster farmers, specifically, but helping shellfish farmers efficiently manage their farms and comply with regulatory requirements. Ganim said the company’s fastest-growing solutions are all around traceability (hence, “Trace” in the name) and a farmer’s ability to keep track of the shellfish from seed to the final consumer.
“Tracking seafood from the tideline to the table builds trust with consumers, meets important regulatory requirements, keeps consumers happy, and grows the entire market,” Ganim writes.
So adopting BlueTrace as the new name better reflects the company’s future, its software’s broader applications, and the founders’ “broader aspirations.”
